The city began issuing free tickets Wednesday to a viewing platform overlooking the World Trade Center site in an effort to control swelling crowds.

More than 100 people lined up an hour before the ticket booth opened near the South Street Seaport Museum, seven blocks east of the site.

City officials said 250 tickets would be distributed for each half-hour viewing session from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to alleviate the long queue at the platform.

Officials said the line at the museum would move faster and wouldn’t interfere with traffic.

The platform opened Dec. 30 and is the first of four planned at the 16-acre site.
