Los Alamitos Gets the Bounce It Needs
It wasn’t a picture-perfect goal, but when Cameron Kolovos’ deflected shot found the back of the net early in the second half of the Sunset League boys’ soccer game at Fountain Valley High on Wednesday, Los Alamitos was on the way to its fourth consecutive shutout.
The 1-0 win was the 11th victory in a row for Los Alamitos (18-1-1, 6-0 in league), ranked No. 5 by The Times, and it marked the second time in three weeks that the Griffins defeated No. 8 Fountain Valley by that score.
“A redirected shot is a keeper’s nightmare,” Los Alamitos Coach Trey Scharlin said about Kolovos’ 14th goal of the season. “It’s tough to readjust when a ball is deflected.”
Kolovos ran down a long cross from Jon Bornstein before letting loose a right-footed shot that was headed toward the right corner of the net before deflecting off Fountain Valley’s Robert Rossy and bouncing slowly inside the left post.
Fountain Valley (13-3-2, 3-3) had a good opportunity to score midway through the second half, when Alex Soria ran down a long ball, but his lofted shot over onrushing goalkeeper Geremy Uhl went about five feet over the goal.
“We had a few chances, but we didn’t execute them,” Fountain Valley Coach Jason Smith said. “But they had more chances than us. [Goalkeeper Kyle Polak] came up with some big saves. He kept us in the game.”

Torrance Bishop Montgomery 2, Playa del Rey St. Bernard 0--Lyle Estrada and Sean Massey each scored a goal for host Bishop Montgomery (10-6-1, 5-0) in the Del Rey League game.
It was Bishop Montgomery’s 30th consecutive victory in league without a tie, tying the Southern Section record set by San Gabriel from 1970-73.
In girls’ water polo:
Santa Ana Foothill 9, Newport Harbor 3--Gabbie Domanic and Brittany Hayes had three goals each and top-ranked Foothill extended its winning streak to 39 games in a nonleague game at Newport Harbor High.
The Knights (16-0) built a 5-0 lead before No. 4 Newport Harbor finally shot the ball past Foothill goalkeeper Emily Feher with two seconds remaining in the first half.
The Sailors couldn’t get off a shot with a man advantage early in the third quarter and Hayes responded by scoring two goals 39 seconds apart in the third quarter to extend the lead to 7-1.
