Forest Service Orders Man to Remove Flagpole

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The U.S. Forest Service has told a tenant that his 20-foot flagpole is unauthorized and has to go.

David Knickerbocker has flown a U.S. flag on the pole near his summer cabin for almost two decades. The former Stockton police officer and Army veteran, who leases a lot in El Dorado National Forest, called the order “unbelievable.”

The agency discovered the pole when it began inspecting lots for lease renewal. “If you’re putting holes in the ground where Native Americans once resided, that needs an archeological review,” said Forest Service spokesman Frank Mosbacher.
