Dr. Irwin Weinstein, 76; Former Chief of Staff at Cedars-Sinai Hospital

Dr. Irwin M. Weinstein, 76, chief of staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the early 1970s and an international authority on clinical hematology, died July 19 of a stroke and kidney failure at UCLA Medical Center.

Weinstein was born in Denver, and he received his medical degree from the University of Denver.

He served in numerous positions at Cedars-Sinai, including chief of staff from 1972 to 1974, and was a member of the Board of Governors. In 1997, he received the Cedars-Sinai Pioneer in Medicine award.

In 1991, the Irwin M. Weinstein Endowed Lectureship in Health and Public Policy was established in perpetuity at the medical center.

Weinstein helped start the National Israel Cancer Research Fund in 1975 and later founded the Los Angeles chapter. During the Clinton administration, he served as an advisor to the National Health Care Reform Task Force.

In 1994, Weinstein was appointed to the committee to study HIV transmission through blood products at the Washington-based Institute of Medicine, and he served as a member of Space Biology and Medicine for the National Academy of Sciences.

Weinstein also was a clinical professor of medicine at UCLA and a member of the Medical School Admissions Committee.
