Galaxy’s Ruiz Suspended, Fined $500

Share

Galaxy rookie forward Carlos Ruiz, Major League Soccer’s leading goal scorer, was hit with a $500 fine and a one-game suspension Thursday by the league’s disciplinary committee for his actions late in the Galaxy’s 3-2 loss Saturday at Colorado.

Ruiz, who has 10 goals in 10 games, will serve his suspension Saturday when the Galaxy plays Chicago at the Rose Bowl.

During stoppage time last weekend, Ruiz struck Rapid midfielder Wes Hart in the midsection. The Guatemalan striker was not called for a foul at the time but replays showed the incident, prompting the penalties.

A $500 fine also was levied against Galaxy Coach Sigi Schmid for approaching referee Peter Kolkowski and his crew after the Galaxy’s third consecutive loss.
