Washington Reaches Milestone to Lead Crew
Dante Washington came off the bench and scored the winning goal as the Columbus Crew defeated the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-1, on Saturday in front of 19,085 at Columbus, Ohio.
Washington’s 50th career goal came off a pass from Brian Maissoneuve as he sent a left-footed shot inside the far post past goalkeeper Joe Cannon in the 83rd minute. Jeff Cunningham assisted on the play. Washington had entered the game 16 minutes earlier.
“[That was] a great No. 50 for Dante,” Crew Coach Greg Andrulis said. “Perfect for him to get the win for us.”
Washington is the 12th player in MLS history to score 50 goals.
Driving rain and high winds kept both teams from creating chances in the first half until Cunningham scored in the 31st minute for the Crew (5-5-2).
Cunningham took a pass from Maissoneuve, dribbled around a defender and sent a right-footed shot inside the far post. Kyle Martino also assisted on the play.
Dwayne DeRosario tied the game in the 39th minute for the Earthquakes (7-4-2) by dribbling around defender Chad McCarty and sending a shot past onrushing goalkeeper Tom Presthus.
The game was the third meeting between the two teams in six weeks. San Jose’s last loss had been on May 18 at Crew Stadium. The Earthquakes beat the Crew, 3-2, on May 4 at Spartan Stadium.
Kansas City 2, Washington 0-- Stephen Armstrong scored against his former team as the Wizards (3-4-4) defeated D.C. United (4-6-1) in front of 9,721 at Kansas City, Mo.
Chris Brown scored the Wizards’ first goal from outside the box in the 34th minute, bending a pass from Diego Gutierrez past United goalkeeper Nick Rimando.
New England 2, Colorado 1--Taylor Twellman had a goal and an assist as the Revolution (4-7-1) defeated the Rapids (6-5-1) in front of 15,125 at Denver to end a three-game losing streak.
The goal was Twellman’s 10th in 10 starts for New England. Brian Kamler scored the game-winner in the second half.
Dallas 3, Chicago 1--Jason Kreis scored two goals, both on free kicks, to lead the Burn (5-2-5) over the Fire (5-5-2) in front of 13,117 at Naperville, Ill.
