Fan Jailed in Japan for Scalping Ticket

An English soccer fan detained by police for more than two weeks for scalping a World Cup ticket is being held under conditions that are normal in Japan and “comply with international standards,” British Embassy spokeswoman Sue Kinoshita said.

John Jones, a 43-year-old jeweler from London, has been kept in solitary confinement since being arrested June 1 outside the stadium at Niigata. He was accused of selling a friend’s unwanted game ticket for nearly twice its value.

Under Japanese law, Jones can be detained for up to 27 days before he must be charged or set free, Kinoshita said.
