Long Beach Poly Outruns the Competition in Relays

Share

The Long Beach Poly boys’ and girls’ track and field teams combined to win 17 of 42 events Saturday in the Northridge-Alemany Relays at Cal State Northridge.

The Jackrabbits, competing in cool and breezy conditions that hampered performances in most running events, won 10 individual events and seven relays.

Hurdler Tunisia Johnson, who has committed to USC, won the 100-meter highs and the 300 lows for the defending state girls’ champions.

She ran 14.99 seconds in the highs while running into a wind of 1.9 meters per second and clocked 44.52 in the lows.

Poly swept the top three places in both of those races, as well as in the 100, which sophomore Shalonda Solomon won in 12.15 while running into a wind of 1.8 meters per second.

The Jackrabbit boys won three individual events.

The most impressive victory came in the 100, when Dedrick Jones clocked 10.93 to turn back teammate Chreston Anderson (11.07) and Noah Smith (11.10) of Woodland Hills Taft.

Compton Dominguez posted notable victories over Poly in winning the boys’ 400 and 1,600 relays.

The Dons ran 42.24 to edge the Jackrabbits by .08 of a second in the 400 relay and they clocked 3 minutes 17.37 seconds in the 1,600 relay to win by more than two seconds.

David Shipp of Valencia was a surprise winner of the 400 when his career-best 49.62 turned back a highly regarded field that included Justin Tryon and Tyrone Melton of Taft and Jarvis Littleton of Dominguez.
