St. John Bosco Promotes Assistant

Bellflower St. John Bosco promoted assistant Randy Held to boys’ basketball coach to replace Matt Hart, who has taken a job as the top assistant with the San Diego State women’s basketball program.

Held served as an assistant under Hart for four years at St. John Bosco and two years at La Puente Bishop Amat.

In other coaching news:

* Torrance Bishop Montgomery has hired former UCLA and NFL linebacker Arnold Ale as football coach.

Ale, a former junior varsity coach at Bishop Montgomery, most recently coached at Long Beach St. Anthony during the 2001 season.

* Dave Goosen has been hired to coach boys’ basketball at Burbank High, where he replaces Ron Quarterman, who left for Pierce College.

Goosen had coached boys’ basketball at Venice High for the past four years.

* Tom Donahue, who has coached boys’ basketball at Santa Paula High for the past 12 seasons, has been hired to coach the same sport at Westlake High, Athletic Director Lisa Magorien said.

* La Verne Bonita promoted assistant Greg Eckler to boys’ basketball coach. Eckler, 27, replaces Milun Mraz, who, in two seasons, led the Bearcats to a 36-19 record and two playoff appearances.

Mraz resigned from his basketball position and boys’ tennis job in March.

* Laguna Hills High promoted Joe Brick to boys’ basketball coach. Brick, 36, replaces longtime coach Dave Brown, who retired as the third-winningest coach in Orange County with 527 career victories. Brick has been an assistant at Laguna Hills for seven years.

* John Stirling has resigned as boys’ soccer coach at Garden Grove Pacifica. He coached the Mariners to a 32-17-1 record and three playoff appearances in three seasons.
