Palmdale Upsets Antelopes

Sean Edwards scored from the one-yard line with 2 minutes 5 seconds left to lift Palmdale to a 20-15 upset victory over Lancaster Antelope Valley in a Golden League game Friday night at Palmdale.

Edwards’ score capped a 10-play, 72-yard drive that began after Antelope Valley, ranked No. 23 by The Times and No. 4 in the Southern Section Division III poll, had taken a 15-14 edge with 5:40 left on a 40-yard reverse halfback option play from Juan Rayford to Eric Wickliffe and a two-point conversion pass from quarterback Johnny Walker to Danny Leist.

The victory moved the Falcons (9-1, 4-1 in the league), the No. 6-ranked team in Division III, into a tie with Antelope Valley (8-2, 4-1) for the league title, but Palmdale will go to the playoffs, which start next week, as the league’s No. 1 team based on head-to-head competition. Highland (7-3, 3-2) lost its bid for a three-way tie with a 22-12 loss to Quartz Hill.

On the winning drive, quarterback Jacob McCravey completed two key passes for five and 38 yards to JaVonte Holmes (four catches, 62 yards) and also ran for three yards and a first down on a fourth-and-one play with 3:50 left. McCravey was 12-of-23 passing for 148 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions.

Palmdale, which took a 14-7 halftime lead, limited Antelope Valley’s vaunted triple-option attack of Walker, Kreig Peters and Sean Wallace to a combined 84 yards rushing. The Antelopes, who had averaged more than 300 yards a game, were held to 162 yards.

Hacienda Heights Los Altos 29, La Verne Bonita 0 -- Knowing that a loss would drop it to third place in the Miramonte League, the Conquerors scored on three of their first four possessions at Bonita and went on to force a three-way tie for the league title.

Los Altos (8-2, 3-1), ranked No. 17 by The Times and No. 1 in Division VI, had already won a coin flip and knew, with a victory, it would be the league’s No. 1 team in the playoffs.

Bonita (5-4, 3-1) will go in as the No. 2 team, and Covina Charter Oak (8-2, 3-1), a 49-7 winner over Pomona Garey, is No. 3.

Daniel Drayton scored twice, from 13 yards for a 7-0 lead and from two yards to make it 20-0 in the first minute of the second quarter.

In between, Randall Brown, who set up the first two scoring drives with 15-yard punt returns, scored on a 37-yard draw play with 1:33 left in the first quarter. Brown carried 19 times for 140 yards.

Los Altos scored in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard pass from Carlos Ordonez to Caleb Flores, and its defense added a safety in the game’s final minutes.

Oxnard 35, Camarillo 13 -- Quarterback Tim Eglin ran for one touchdown and threw for another and slot back Marcelino Villavicencio scored one touchdown rushing and another receiving to help visiting Oxnard (9-1, 5-0) win its third consecutive Pacific View League title.

Camarillo (5-5, 3-2) cut a 14-10 halftime deficit to 14-13 with 5:55 left in the third quarter on a 26-yard field goal by Chris Chase. But Villavicencio capped a 10-play, 83-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run with 10:16 left in the game, and tailback Aaron Brown scored six minutes later on a three-yard run to cap a five-play, 69-yard drive.

Oxnard, the No. 2 team in Division IV, capped its scoring with 2:16 left when linebacker Moises Rosales scored a touchdown on a 65-yard interception return.

Eglin rushed for 74 yards in seven carries, including a 52-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and completed five of eight passes for 72 yards.

Villavicencio had two carries for 53 yards and two receptions for 49 yards.

Riverside North 28, Moreno Valley Canyon Springs 17 -- Behind the passing combination of Dion and Damon Morton, the Huskies won the Ivy League title outright with the victory at Canyon Springs.

Dion, a junior quarterback, threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns and his twin brother caught five passes for 87 yards and a touchdown as North (7-3, 5-0) won its second league title in three years.

Canyon Springs (8-1-1, 4-1) took a 3-0 lead on a school-record 54-yard field goal by Mike Hughes on its first possession.

But North needed only four plays, including a 28-yard scramble by Dion on North’s first play, to take a 7-3 lead on Josh Barnett’s 34-yard run. It was the first time this season that the Cougars trailed in a game.

A 55-yard reception by Adam Wright on the final play of the first quarter set up Dion’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Damon.

Monrovia 45, Temple City 35 -- Monrovia overcame a 14-3 first-half deficit by scoring 28 points thanks to Temple City turnovers to take the Rio Hondo League title over the defending champions at Monrovia.

Monrovia (10-0, 5-0) won in spite of 425 all-purpose yards from tailback Desmond Reed, who accounted for all five scores for Temple City (7-3, 4-1). Reed tallied three rushing touchdowns to go with 170 yards in 16 carries and kick returns of 87 and 85 yards for scores.

The Wildcats were led by Adam Gabriel, who rushed for 144 yards in 24 carries with one touchdown.
