BOB MIESZERSKI’S OAK TREE HANDICAP

Share

At Santa Anita

Sunday, Oct. 6. First Post 12:30 p.m.

Selections, made for a fast track,

appear in order of handicapper’s preference.

*--* 1036 FIRST RACE--6 1/2 furlongs, 3-year-olds & up, maiden fillies & mares, purse $42,000

*--*

*--* PR Horse(PP) Jockey, Wt Odds 8305 Secret Approval(3) D. Flores, 120 5-2 --- Leginit(7) M. Smith, 120 7-2 8083 Balcovy(1) G. Stevens, 120 3 --- Exy(6) G. Gomez, 120 5 8256 Voladera(5) P. Valenzuela, 120 8 --- Summertime Fun(2) Krigger, 117 12 7417 Charm City Heroine(4) Enriqez, 120 12

*--*

Comments: SECRET APPROVAL finished a decent third in her bow for Dan Hendricks, beaten 2 1/2 lengths by Oak Leaf entrant Espy. The barn does better with maidens second time out of the box and she will be right with the lead as David Flores takes over. LEGINIT is a firster by Dehere from a winning barn (Laura De Seroux) and the stable can pop with a rookie--Azeri won at a monster price at this meet last year in her bow--and she had 59 1/5 and 35 2/5 drills at San Luis Rey. She will race on Lasix. BALCOVY disappointed after a slow start at 7-2 down south, but fits off her previous pair for Eduardo Inda. She has trained well locally for her first appearance in more than two months.

*--* 1037 SECOND RACE--1 mile on turf, 3-year-olds & up, maidens, purse $45,000

*--*

*--* PR Horse(PP) Jockey, Wt Odds 8341 Hecandigit(8) G. Stevens, 119 9-5 8309 Mayor Murphy(3) D. Flores, 119 7-2 8328 Habaneros(4) Nakatani, 119 5 8095 Chadwicks Well(6) M. Smith, 119 8 --- Account Renewed(9) Blanc, 119 12 --- What A View(7) Krigger, 114 12 --- Taramot(2) C. Rollins, 122 20 8318 Vino Classico(5) Puglisi, 119 20 --- Kernoff(1) P. Valenzuela, 119 20

*--*

Comments: HECANDIGIT was overmatched in his latest on the grass when last at nearly 30-1 in the Del Mar Derby. Back in with maidens, the son of Marlin can get the job done against a rather weak group and he did work a mile in 1:43 and a half in 47 flat for Warren Stute. MAYOR MURPHY is another trial horse with 13 defeats on his resume, but he did run well in his lone start down south for Vladimir Cerin and is an obvious must use in the exotics. He has been second or third six times. HABANEROS will be part of the pace as he goes long and tries turf for the first time in his third appearance for Ray Bell. The runner-up in his last race (Prime Time Event) ran well to be second on the local lawn behind Vronsky on Wednesday.

Longshot: WHAT A VIEW

*--* 1038 THIRD RACE--6 furlongs, 3-year-olds & up, fillies & mares, allowance/claiming, claiming price $62,500, purse $50,000

*--*

*--* PR Horse(PP) Jockey, Wt Odds 8007 Shameful(1) D. Flores, 116 8-5 (8246) Real Paranoide(3) P. Valenzuela, 120 5-2 8227 Farah Love(2) Sorenson, 118 4 8007 Square Dance(4) Nakatani, 118 5 --- Party Pirate(6) Pincay, 118 8 --- Cacique Bar(5) Valdivia, 118 12

*--*

Comments: SHAMEFUL makes her first start since July 24 for Bob Baffert and the Flying Chevron miss is clearly the one to catch as she returns to the scene of both of her victories. She won the first two outings of her career here in January and February. She sizzled six furlongs in 1:11 4/5 a week ago. REAL PARANOIDE bids for her fourth consecutive win and the late running sprinter is on top of her game for Pete Eurton. She has been 1-2 in nine of 14 at this trip, but will she get enough help to set up her charge? FARAH LOVE is a hard knocking mare who has to be respected with the move to Arcadia. A four-time winner, ‘LOVE has earned three of those victories at this place. She won a pair during the winter-spring meet.

Longshot: PARTY PIRATE

*--* 1039 FOURTH RACE--1 mile on turf, 2-year-old maidens, purse $45,000

*--*

*--* PR Horse(PP) Jockey, Wt Odds 8354 Apalachian Thunder(7) Sorenson, 117 5-2 8339 Savonarola(2) P. Valenzuela, 117 3 8252 Swelter(9) G. Gomez, 117 4 8249 Devote(10) Valdivia, 117 6 8354 Victory Song(1) D. Flores, 117 10 8252 Tack Attack(5) Pincay, 117 10 8354 Slew City Citadel(8) Almeida, 117 15 8354 Jake Skate(11) M. Comments: APALACHIAN THUNDER was the runner-up to Norfolk participant Listen Indy when stretched to a mile, and finished four lengths clear of a next out winner. ‘THUNDER looks to be sitting on his maiden victory for Howard Zucker and can get the money if he takes to the turf. He worked five furlongs in 1:00 3/5 a week ago. SAVONAROLA is bred for the sod and should improve on the stretch out for Eoin Harty. He will show his speed with Patrick Valenzuela. SWELTER finished a distant second to the promising Man Among Men and is one of only three in here with grass experience. He has had four local works for Dave Hofmans since racing on Aug. 26.

Longshot: TACK ATTACK

*--* 1040 FIFTH RACE--1 1/16 miles, 3-year-olds & up, starter allowance, purse $28,000

*--*

*--* PR Horse(PP) Jockey, Wt Odds 8289 More Influence(4) Valdivia, 120 5-2 (8224) French Rebel(2) Pincay, 122 3 --- Trimontium(5) G. Gomez, 117 9-2 8289 Bold N Old(3) Nakatani, 120 6 (8267) Stokin Coal(1) P. Valenzuela, 117 8 --- T.H. Lear(7) Enriquez, 120 15 --- Pavlosk(8) Blanc, 119 15 --- Mecanico(6) M. Smith, 119 15

*--*

Comments: MORE INFLUENCE was rushed into a speed jam while wide going short down south in a spot where he looked as if he would settle behind the leaders and make a late run. Not surprisingly, he had nothing to give late and wound up fifth as the 17-10 favorite. The gelding goes long again today, and although he was no match for a then-sharp California Goal, he did run decently in a Del Mar route. He worked in 59 1/5 for Cliff Sise Jr. and gets the call in a contentious race. FRENCH REBEL dominated maidens as the even-money choice and may be coming around for Bill Spawr. Warn Me Again, who finished seven lengths behind him, was a next out winner. TRIMONTIUM scratched from a turf race to go here and now tries the dirt for the first time. The son of Mt. Livermore has trained well on the main for Carla Gaines and he will race on Lasix for the first time.

Longshot: STOKIN COAL

*--* 1041 SIXTH RACE--1 1/16 miles, Oak Leaf Stakes, 2-year-old fillies, purse $200,000

*--*

*--* PR Horse(PP) Jockey, Wt Odds 8288 Sea Jewel(6) V. Espinoza, 119 4 (8296) Espy(2) Pincay, 119 5-2 (8336) Composure(3) M. Smith, 119 7-2 8288 Buffythecenterfold(4) M. Garcia, 119 2 --- Heart Ofa Champion(1) G. Stevens, 119 8 8323 Honest Answer(5) D. Flores, 119 10

*--*

Comments: SEA JEWEL was a distant fourth in the Del Mar Debutante but missed third money by only a head and acts like a filly who will improve routing. Her maiden win for John Shirreffs was visually impressive and she has trained well enough at ‘Anita. Tab in a weak renewal of the Oak Leaf. ESPY dominated maidens in her second start for Richard Mandella and is another who should be able to handle the additional yardage. She’s by Mt. Livermore, who is a son of Blushing Groom, out of a Cox’s Ridge mare. COMPOSURE got her act together in her third start for Baffert and remains well regarded by the stable. Fast works continue for the daughter of Touch Gold. She went a bullet 1:11 2/5 a week ago and had a 1:37 4/5 move six days earlier.

Longshot: HEART OFA CHAMPION

*--* 1042 SEVENTH RACE--1 1/8 miles, Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap, 3-year-olds & up, purse $500,000

*--* PR Horse(PP) Jockey, Wt Odds 8243 Momentum(5) Nakatani, 119 9-5 8307 Kela(4) G. Stevens, 116 7-2 8243 Pleasantly Perfect(9) Solis, 114 4 --- Reba’s Gold(1) D. Flores, 114 5 8307 Euchre(6) P. Valenzuela, 116 6 --- Like A Hero(7) Pincay, 114 10 8243 Grey Memo(2) M. Garcia, 116 12 --- Truly A Judge(8) Valdivia, 110 15 8243 Tapatio(3) Almeida, 112 20

*--*

Comments: MOMENTUM is due for some luck after narrow losses in the Hollywood Gold Cup and Pacific Classic. He lacked room into the lane in the race at Del Mar and it can be argued that he would have beaten Came Home had he found an opening earlier. He’s reunited with Corey Nakatani, who won the 2001 Native Diver Handicap with this 4-year-old. KELA was given too much to do and was caught wide while rallying when chasing Congaree home in the Del Mar Breeders’ Cup Handicap last month. The Numerous colt blew out in 33 2/5 on Friday morning and Gary Stevens rode him perfectly when they collaborated in an allowance race at Del Mar in July. PLEASANTLY PERFECT was fourth in the Pacific Classic and the improving Pleasant Colony colt has never been worse than second in three races over this track. He prepped in 1:12 4/5 for Mandella eight days ago.

Longshot: LIKE A HERO

*--* 1043 EIGHTH RACE--1 1/4 miles on turf, Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Turf Championship, 3-year-olds & up, purse $300,000

*--*

*--* PR Horse(PP) Jockey, Wt Odds --- a-Sarafan(1) Nakatani, 124 9-5 --- Skipping(6) Solis, 124 5-2 8298 The Tin Man(3) M. Smith, 124 7-2 8298 Blue Steller(4) P. Valenzuela, 124 5 (6330) Nazirali(7) Blanc, 124 8 8298 Mister Kybelee(5) D. Flores, 124 12 --- a-Hawkeye(2) G. Stevens, 124 9-5 8043 Night Patrol(8) Valdivia, 124 15

*--*

Comments: SARAFAN missed by a head to Beat Hollow in the Arlington Million and isn’t facing any such competition in a race that probably does not deserve Grade I status given its recent history. The consistent gelding has been 1-2 in nearly half of his 27 starts and he has trained well, including 1:25 and 1:27 2/5 over this oval. SKIPPING was only beaten two lengths behind With Anticipation, who would be very hard to handle in this spot, and the 5-year-old did run well in his only other try on this course for Bobby Frankel. He has yet to finish off the board in his four races in the U.S. THE TIN MAN has won five times in 10 starts for Mandella and four of the scores have been local. This will be his first try at 10 furlongs, but he was only beaten a neck by longshot Delta Form going 1 3/8 miles in the Del Mar Handicap.

*--* 1044 NINTH RACE--6 furlongs, 2-year-old maidens, purse $42,000

Comments: BINNY’S TRICK has trained as if he has some ability for Nick Canani, working five furlongs in 59 1/5 six days before a 48 flat drill. The son of Phone Trick has the comfortable outside box and looks as good as any in a race where eight of the 10 entrants are firsters. MIDDLEWEIGHT is a son of Grand Slam, who is off to a good start as a sire, and the presence of David Flores suggests he may have some zip. The chestnut had a 1:12 2/5 work on Sept. 18 for Mandella. GOLDEN EMBERS is a gelded son of Danjur who blew out in 35 1/5 for Inda and also had 1:00 4/5 and 59 1/5 spins. The barn does well with rookies.
