Hersperia Sultana backed up its No. 3 national ranking by winning the Division I-II team sweepstakes race of the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational on Saturday with one of the best performances by a Southern Section team. The cumulative time of the Sultans’ top five runners was the fastest recorded on Mt. SAC’s 2.91-mile course and rivaled the performance turned in by a 1981 Irvine University squad over a slightly longer Mt. SAC course.

Unbeaten Beverly Hills, which has been without No. 1 player Riza Zalameda as she focuses on international and junior-circuit play, took over the No. 2 spot with sophomore Tessa Tran leading the way. Corona del Mar, though, has struggled without star Anne Yelsey, who sat out a tight victory over Laguna Beach and a loss to Dana Hills last week. Dana Hills moved up one spot to No. 5 with a strong rebound from the loss of freshman standout Sarah Fansler. The Dolphins are showing they’re still good after decisive victories over Trabuco Hills and Mission Viejo, and an impressive 12-6 victory over Corona del Mar.
