From Times Staff Reports

The Costa Mesa City Council has placed City Atty. Jerry Scheer and Assistant City Atty. Tom Wood on paid leave while members review their work performance, officials said.

Sources familiar with the council’s action said it resulted from a personnel matter and not because of wrongdoing by Scheer or Wood.

Councilman Gary Monahan said fellow council members Karen Robinson and Libby Cowan have been appointed to look into the issue and will report their findings to the council. He declined to comment further.

Scheer and Wood will be on paid leave for three weeks.

Personnel issues are usually handled in closed session before the council.

Scheer and Wood could not be reached for comment.
