Nevada running back Chance Kretschmer, who led the NCAA in rushing last season, suffered a season-ending knee injury Saturday against Brigham Young and has surgery scheduled Monday.

Kretschmer tore his anterior cruciate ligament on his first carry against BYU when he was hit late out of bounds by two defenders. The Cougars were called for a 15-yard personal foul. The play was one part of what Nevada players and coaches said was a dirty game.

“I’ll just say this, I can only coach my team, but I’ll tell you what, that shot on Chance Kretschmer was three yards out of bounds and was uncalled for,” Nevada Coach Chris Tormey said.

Auburn will play its fourth game in 18 days tonight when it travels to Starkville, Miss., to play Mississippi State in a Southeastern Conference game. The game will also be a test of a new conference rule--thought to be directed toward Bulldog fans--against artificial noisemakers. Bulldog fans traditionally ring cowbells throughout a game. Officials have been instructed to penalize the home team five yards for the first infraction and 15 yards for each additional offense.
