Pruitt’s Eligibility Is Under Review

The City Section is reviewing the eligibility of Gabriel Pruitt, a Westchester High basketball player who transferred from Compton Centennial.
Pruitt, a top junior guard who helped Centennial reach the Division III state championship game, is attending Westchester on an opportunity transfer from Manual Arts, his home school.
Barbara Fiege, the City commissioner, said eligibility issues have been raised by people from “outside” Westchester. “There’s conflicting information,” Fiege said.
Westchester administrators have been asked to investigate.
The Comets won the state Division I championship last season with no players on their roster who lived within the school’s attendance boundaries.

Lisa Baker has resigned as softball coach at Irvine after 14 seasons. Baker, who coached the Vaqueros to a Southern Section title in 1991, had considered resigning for some time.
“She has two kids in grade school and hung in for a couple of years just to help us out,” Athletic Director Terry Henigan said. “I think she’ll return to coaching as an assistant and she might come back and be a head coach. But right now, her family won’t allow it.”

Rod Sherman has been chosen as the athletic director at Orange Lutheran High. Sherman, the football team’s offensive coordinator, replaces Jim Kunau, who is also the football coach.
Kunau left the position to direct the school’s American Leadership Institute, a developmental program on campus that will eventually involve other high schools.

Tesoro High does not have a senior on its campus and is playing its first year of varsity competition, but the girls’ volleyball team defeated Trabuco Hills in three games on Tuesday and San Clemente in four games last week.
Not bad work for the second-year school in Las Flores, which is awaiting completion of its gym. Construction is expected to be finished in two weeks.
“We’re maybe a little ahead of schedule [as a team], but I’ll take it,” said John Gipe, who coached at Capistrano Valley for 19 seasons before taking the job at Tesoro. “We’re 2-0, but you know how the business goes. You’ve got to keep proving yourself.”
