Santa Ana Calvary Chapel Hires Holiday

Josh Holiday has replaced Joey Coughran as wrestling coach at Santa Ana Calvary Chapel.

Coughran coached one season after taking over for John Azevedo, but left to help start a church in Europe.

Holiday, who won state titles at 145 and 152 pounds in 1994-95 while at Calvary Chapel, inherits a team that has won seven of the last nine state team titles and finished fifth last year.

Fullerton Rosary, paced by senior Gina Gattari’s two-over-par 37, shot a three-player total of 117 at Alhambra Golf Course and won the 21-team Alhambra Keppel girls’ golf invitational, which featured four of The Times’ top 10 teams.

Peninsula, ranked No. 2 by The Times, also shot 117, but lost a first-hole card-off to No. 8 Rosary. Freshman Angela Park of Torrance shot 34 and was the individual champion.

Elizabeth Exon swept at No. 1 singles, and Heather Husted and Lindsay Rye swept at No. 1 doubles to lead ninth-ranked Irvine Woodbridge to a 10-8 victory over No. 10 Irvine University in a nonleague girls’ tennis match at University.The Warriors clinched the victory when Natalie Call won 7-5 in the last rotation at No. 3 singles.

The Long Beach Poly boys and the Murrieta Valley girls top the list of teams from the region that will run in the Great American Cross-Country Festival at Charlotte, N.C., Friday and Saturday.

Poly, Riverside Rubidoux and Placentia Valencia are among 28 teams from 18 states entered in the boys’ race of champions Saturday.

Murrieta Valley, Chino Hills Ayala, Fountain Valley and Anaheim Esperanza are four of 28 teams from 18 states that will run in the girls’ race of champions event that starts 30 minutes after the boys’ race is completed.

The South Coast boys’ water polo tournament will take place Thursday through Saturday at Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar, Placentia El Dorado and Tustin high schools.

Among The Times’ ranked teams, only No. 3 North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake is not competing in the 32-team tournament.

Eight teams will play at each of the four sites on all three days, with the top eight teams competing Saturday at Newport Harbor, where the championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Among possible second-round matchups Thursday is No. 5 Santa Ana Foothill against No. 10 Villa Park.

Before league realignment sent Foothill to the Sea View League this season, the teams competed in the Century League, where one of them was league champion in 23 of the last 26 years.

In last year’s championship game, Corona del Mar defeated La Jolla The Bishop’s.

Jason Gilzene, a 6-foot-5 senior forward at Fairfax High, has committed to Cal State Sacramento.... Dwain Williams, a 6-1 shooting guard who averaged 18 points last season as a freshman at Fresno San Joaquin Memorial, has transferred to Temecula Chaparral, Puma Athletic Director Mike Rowan said.
