Two Big Rallies Send Marymount Past Mater Dei

The L.A. Marymount girls’ volleyball team faced two late deficits against Santa Ana Mater Dei, but rallied to win the Dave Mohs tournament championship Monday night at Huntington Beach Edison High, 15-13, 16-14.

Marymount, a well-tested team that is No. 2 in The Times’ rankings, came back from a 12-10 deficit in the first game and a 14-5 deficit in the second.

“They like to get me up and screaming,” Coach Cari Klein said. “When they need to win, they do.”

Sixth-ranked Mater Dei did not start any seniors, but still had a strong run in the three-day tournament.

“We kind of crumbled a bit at the end,” Coach Craig Pazanti said. “But [it was] definitely a positive for the weekend.”

Carson junior quarterback Beau Davis is not expected to play in the Colts’ home game Friday against Granada Hills Kennedy because of a pinched nerve.

Sophomore Bo Napoleon, who played in the second half of the Colts’ 39-0 loss to No. 8 Woodland Hills Taft last Friday, will get the start. Davis was injured in the third quarter, when a Taft defender hit him hard on his left side.

“Beau hasn’t been cleared yet,” Coach John Aguirre said, “but we’re expecting that he’ll get cleared today for light practice.”

Davis completed seven of 15 passes for 138 yards with one pass intercepted against Taft, and Napoleon was five for 15 for 37 yards.

Shortstop Ray Ravago of Mission Hills Alemany has committed to Cal State Northridge. He hit seven home runs last season.
