Felix’s Coach Thinks Triple

No athlete has won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races in the state track and field championships in the same year, but North Hills L.A. Baptist sprint Coach Jonathan Patton spoke about the possibility of senior Allyson Felix attempting such a triple after watching her break the national junior (age 19 and under) and high school records in the 200 at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on Saturday.

Felix won the women’s invitational 200 in 22.51 seconds at Mt. SAC to better the previous junior and high school records of 22.58 set by Marion Jones of Thousand Oaks in 1992.

Felix, who has signed a letter of intent with USC, also posted the fastest times in the nation this year in the 100 with a wind-aided 11.24 and in the 400 with a career-best 52.26.

“I start thinking in the direction of the [400, 100 and 200] at state,” Patton said. “If she already has the 200-meter record in hand and proves that she can run a 100 meters on the heels of a 400, then why not?”

Winning all three races in the state championships on June 6-7 at Cerritos College would be extremely difficult for a number of reasons:

* California has several elite girls’ sprinters.

* Felix would have to run a qualifying heat in each race June 6 and in the finals the next day.

* Perhaps most important, the final of the 400 would be run 15 minutes before the final of the 100.

Lancaster Paraclete, which won an unprecedented five Southern Section Division XI and XII football championships, has hired Jeff Jambretz as head coach.

Jambretz, who teaches at the school and was offensive coordinator when the team began its run of championships under former coach Steve Hagerty, replaces Jeff Cortez, who resigned earlier this year to take over at Lancaster.

Cortez’s first two Paraclete teams won the fourth and fifth titles in 2000 and 2001. The Spirits finished 9-4 last season, falling, 41-17, in the semifinals to eventual Division XI champion Carpinteria.

Jerry Scott, defensive coordinator at Moreno Valley last season, has been chosen head football coach, pending approval by the school board.

He replaces Will Martin, who resigned after three seasons but will remain at Moreno Valley as a teacher.

Scott, 47, had previously served as head coach at Los Angeles Salesian and Montebello Cantwell Sacred Heart.

Citing a desire to have an on-campus boys’ basketball coach, Fontana administrators informed William Harris he would not be returning in the fall.

Harris was 36-16 in two seasons at Fontana, including 25-3 this season, when the Steelers won the Citrus Belt League title.

In the last two years, Fontana has had two players transfer to Santa Ana Mater Dei and one each to Rialto Eisenhower and Etiwanda. It has gained four transfers from Rialto.

Van Nuys Montclair Prep, which is banned from postseason play for one year because of rule violations, announced that it will replace football coach George Giannini and boys’ basketball coach Tyrone Fuller.

Ben Dale has resigned as boys’ basketball coach at Littlerock after five seasons. He will teach Spanish at Palmdale Knight in the fall but has no plans to coach at the first-year school.

Erik Acevedo, a water polo goalkeeper for Agoura, has committed to UC Davis. Named the Marmonte League’s co-most valuable player in the fall, Acevedo had a school-record 386 saves and helped the Chargers win the league title.

Other college commitments:

* Scott Langendoen, a water polo player at Arcadia, with Loyola Marymount.

* Katelyn Ciarelli, a track and field athlete from Huntington Beach, with Long Beach State. She has a best of 148 feet 4 inches in the discus and 36-10 in the shot.

* Aaron Gonzales, a quarterback and Southern Section Division XI co-player of the year for champion Carpinteria, with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
