West Wins National Junior Team Golf Event

Angela Park of Torrance, Jennie Lee of Huntington Beach and Daniel Im of La Mirada posted singles match-play victories Thursday, leading the West team to a 26-24 come-from-behind victory over the East in the American Junior Golf Assn. Canon Cup at Sea Island, Ga.

Anthony Kim of La Quinta halved his singles match, and Torrance’s Amie Cochran clinched the West’s victory when she halved with Whitney Myers of Pennsylvania.

The East led, 10-5, after the first day and had a 16-14 lead after the second day. The East leads the annual team-match series, 7-6-1, though the West has won three in a row and four of the last five.

Incoming UCLA freshman Hanna Jun was 4-0 during the matches. Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana of Long Beach and Seung Su Han of Chino Hills were also on the winning team.

Tarzana resident Jamil Al-Agba, seeded third, defeated No. 9 Scott Oudsema of Portage, Mich., 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the boys’ 18 division semifinals at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Super National Hard Court Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Fourth-seeded Robert Yim, formerly of Glendale High, is playing in the other half of the draw and will face John Isner of Greensboro, N.C., in a quarterfinal today. Yim, who will attend UCLA on a tennis scholarship in the fall, was a boys’ 18 semifinalist at the Easter Bowl/USTA Spring National Championships in April.

Gary Sacks, a Calabasas High junior who was the Southern Section singles champion last spring, is seeded third and is still playing in the boys’ 16 tournament. He will play Bryan Koniecko of Jericho, N.Y., today in the quarterfinals.

Trevor Plouffe, a pitcher-infielder at Encino Crespi, was selected to participate in the inaugural AFLAC All-American High School Baseball Classic Aug. 23 at Fort Myers, Fla.

Plouffe will play for the West squad. A Times’ All-Star selection, the senior-to-be led Crespi to the Southern Section Division III championship by going 13-1 with an 0.71 earned-run average. He also hit .500 with six homers and 47 runs batted in.

The Area Code Games, a week-long series featuring top high school baseball players from across the nation, continue today with the first of four games beginning at 9 a.m. at Long Beach Blair Field.

The series concludes Saturday with a 9 a.m. game followed by an all-star game at noon.

The La Morinda water polo team from Moraga, Calif., defeated Sunset from San Diego, 9-8, to win its third consecutive men’s 20-and-under national championship at UC Santa Cruz on Wednesday.

La Morinda’s B team defeated the Chino Hills Area Water Polo team, 10-9, in the third-place game.

The men’s water polo nationals, also at Santa Cruz, continue through Sunday.
