Reports: Dallas to Trade Van Exel for Jamison

An eight-player trade is in the works that would send Nick Van Exel from the Dallas Mavericks to the Golden State Warriors for Antawn Jamison, according to reports.

The Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported on their Web sites Friday night that Chris Mills, Danny Fortson and Jiri Welsch would also come to Dallas as part of the deal. Avery Johnson, Evan Eschmeyer and Popeye Jones would join Van Exel in going to Golden State.

The U.S. Olympic qualifying basketball team’s exhibition game against Puerto Rico, scheduled Friday night, in New York, was postponed until Sunday because of lingering blackout conditions at Madison Square Garden.

The Portland Trail Blazers have terminated the contract of Arvydas Sabonis, who would have made $7 million this season and said earlier this week that he intended to retire.... Guard Anthony Peeler signed with the Sacramento Kings.... The Lakers signed free-agent center Eric Chenowith.

Seventh-seeded Andy Roddick easily advanced to the semifinals of the Cincinnati Masters at Mason, Ohio, defeating Mariano Zabaleta, 6-1, 6-2. Unseeded Max Mirnyi waited out two rain delays totaling nearly three hours, then upset sixth-seeded Guillermo Coria, 6-2, 7-5.

French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne defeated Elena Bovina, 6-2, 6-4, gaining the semifinals of the Rogers AT&T; Cup in Toronto. Henin-Hardenne, ranked third in the world, will play ninth-seeded Elena Dementieva, who beat defending champion Amelie Mauresmo, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

A left foot injury that has sidelined her since May will keep Monica Seles out of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, scheduled to start in New York on Aug. 25.

Laura Diaz shot four-under-par 67 and had a three-stroke lead at 10-under 132 after 36 holes of the LPGA’s Jamie Farr Classic at Sylvania, Ohio. Michelle Wie shot 72 and missed her first cut in five LPGA Tour events this year.

Bruce Fleisher had eight birdies in shooting a bogey-free, tournament-record 62 for the first-round lead in the Champions Tour’s Long Island Classic at East Meadow, N.Y.

Jennie Lee, 16, of Huntington Beach, shot three-under 69 Thursday for a three-day total of one-under 215 in winning the American Junior Golf Assn. tournament at Patterson, Calif.

The Mighty Ducks extended the contract of Coach Mike Babcock by one year, through the 2004-05 season. Babcock led the Ducks to the Stanley Cup finals in his first season as an NHL coach. Assistant coaches Lorne Henning and Paul MacLean received similar extensions.

Super heavyweight Jason Estrada of Providence, R.I., won the Pan American Games boxing gold medal, defeating Michael Lopez Nunez of Cuba, 14-6, at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Morgan Hentzen of La Habra Heights won the women’s swimming 800 freestyle.

Bobby Labonte turned a lap at 190.240 mph in his Chevrolet and won the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Winston Cup Series GFS Marketplace 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich.
