TANTALIZING TIDBITS

* Malibu (18-5) finished the regular season with the best record in school history but will not play in the postseason after failing to submit paperwork after a misunderstanding about playoff procedures.

* Calabasas’ Russell White will not coach the third-seeded Coyotes in their Division III-AA first-round game against Temple City after being ejected during Calabasas’ 89-66 loss to Moorpark during the Marmonte League championship.

LOOKING AHEAD

* Santa Ana Mater Dei vs. Compton Dominguez, Division II-A semifinals. This game would match legendary coaches Gary McKnight and Russell Otis, in his return after a two-year absence.

* Long Beach Poly vs. Fontana, Division I-AA quarterfinals. The defending division champion Jackrabbits would have their hands full with a spirited Steeler team that features outstanding quickness and long-range shooting.

Ben Bolch has been a Los Angeles Times staff writer since 1999. He is serving his second stint as the UCLA beat writer, which seems fitting since he has covered almost every sports beat except hockey and horse racing. Bolch was once selected by NBA TV’s “The Starters” as the “Worst of the Week” after questioning their celebrity journalism-style questions at an NBA All-Star game and considers it one of his finer moments.
