* Vince Ortiz of Acton Vasquez pitched a no-hitter -- the fourth this season by the Mustangs (8-0) -- in a 12-0 victory over Gardena Masada.

* Angel Sanchez had two two-run home runs and a two-run triple in West Covina’s 10-3 victory over La Puente Nogales.

HEROICS

* Nick Tanos’ two-out, two-run home run in the eighth inning gave Cypress a 6-5 victory over Placentia Valencia.

* Outfielder Efrain Cervantes’ run-scoring double in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Lake Balboa Birmingham over Reseda Cleveland, 2-1.

ON DECK

* Bragging rights in the West Valley League -- and the City Section -- are at stake twice: Woodland Hills El Camino Real is at Chatsworth today, with a rematch Thursday at El Camino Real.

* Jo Jo Reyes transferred from Riverside Arlington to Riverside Poly during the off-season.... Was it worth it? The ranked rivals play an Ivy League game Tuesday at Poly.

Mike Bresnahan previously covered the Lakers for the Los Angeles Times. He started the beat in 2004, a month after Shaquille O’Neal was traded, and covered several seasons of mediocrity before the Lakers won back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010. Now they’re back to mediocrity. Bresnahan is from Los Angeles, started with The Times after graduating the University of Wisconsin in 1994, and has also covered the L.A. Kings, pro beach volleyball and numerous colleges and high schools. He left The Times in 2016.
