Wooding Keeps Woods’ Feat in Sight

Defending champion Josh Wooding of Riverside Poly seeks a piece of history as he leads a field of 92 players into the Southern Section boys’ golf individual championship today at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.
Wooding, a senior headed to USC, shot four-under-par 68 last year and won by two strokes over Henry Liaw of Hacienda Heights Los Altos, Kyle Dowden of Camarillo and Jay Choi of Cerritos.
Should he successfully defend his title, Wooding would be the first to do so since Tiger Woods did it while playing for Anaheim Western in 1993-94. Woods won in 1991 and is one of three players to win it three times.
Liaw and Dowden also return and should be counted among the favorites. Others to watch include Kevin Larsen of San Marcos, Phil Telliard of Riverside Poly, David Yoon of Irvine Woodbridge, Brandon Christianson of Valencia and Daniel Im of La Mirada.

Three-sport standout Geoffrey Chizever leads unseeded Calabasas Viewpoint (17-1) against fourth-seeded Rosemead Bosco Tech (20-2) today at Calabasas Tennis and Swim Club in a Southern Section Division V boys’ tennis quarterfinal.
Chizever, a junior who lost Thursday in the third round of the Southern Section singles tournament, is unbeaten in 52 sets of round-robin play this season. Chizever, the three-time Liberty League champion, is also the starting quarterback for football and point guard for basketball.
“He does it all,” said tennis Coach Asif Azhar, who is in his 13th season. “But tennis is his best sport. People don’t know him because he hasn’t played in a lot of tournaments, but he’s a very good player.”
