Two people were rescued from a second-floor balcony during a fire Monday morning that caused $250,000 in damage to an Anaheim apartment complex.

Fire broke out about 5:40 a.m. and swept through an upper-floor apartment at 416 E. Sycamore St., said Maria Sabol, an Anaheim Fire Department spokeswoman.

When firefighters arrived, Sabol said, a 68-year-old man and a woman were trapped on a balcony. Firefighters brought both down a ladder while the fire continued to burn.

The two were taken to a hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation, Sabol said.

Although most of the fire damage was to one apartment, four nearby apartments sustained smoke and water damage. About 16 people were temporarily homeless, and the Red Cross provided assistance.
