From Staff Reports

The Southern Section has agreed in principle to have next month’s Division I football championship game on live television and the Division II final shown live on cable.

Channel 9 will carry the Division I final at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12. Fox Sports Net will carry the Division II championship game at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13. Both games will be played at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

Although contracts have not been signed, a section official said that the total value of the deals is believed to be about $20,000 but could go higher.

The official said Fox Sports, which is in the second year of a three-year agreement with the section, had first rights on the Division I game but passed.

The KCAL deal marks the first live broadcast of a section championship football contest since the 1986 Division I game at the Coliseum was carried by Channel 13.

In a prepared statement, Commissioner Jim Staunton said that the deals were “a great situation for all involved” and that he was happy that the section would be able to share the games with those unable to see them in person.
