Santa Barbara Wins Boys’ Water Polo Title

Tyler Wilson scored four goals in a row and Santa Barbara scored five consecutive goals in a four-minute stretch to rally for a 10-8 victory Saturday over cross-town rival San Marcos in the Southern Section Division IV boys’ water polo championship at UC Santa Barbara.

The score was tied, 5-5, before San Marcos scored to take the lead in the third quarter. Wilson, however, scored twice in the last two minutes of the third quarter and two more times in the opening minute of the fourth to give the Dons (23-10) a 9-6 lead.

Teammate Tyson Perkins tacked on another goal to finish the spurt and put Santa Barbara ahead, 10-6..

Wilson finished with six goals and had a school-record 172 for the season. Perkins had two goals in the game.

Santa Barbara, which won its third division title in four seasons, also got 10 saves by goalie Johnny Gaspardis.

Southern Section girls’ tennis -- Villa Park senior Lindsey Nelson, the section’s singles runner-up the last two seasons, advanced to the round of 16, and Corona del Mar senior Brittany Holland’s season ended after three rounds of preliminaries in the section’s individual tournament.

Nelson defeated Santa Ana Saddleback’s Molly Banos and Santa Ana Mater Dei’s Michelle Murphy after a first-round bye. Holland was beaten by Los Alamitos’ Gia Nafarrete, 6-0, 6-7 (5), 10-8, in the third round.

Campbell Hall, Laguna Beach and Newport Harbor each had two doubles teams advance.
