Dos Pueblos Sets Girls’ Golf Scoring Mark

Goleta Dos Pueblos broke its unofficial girls’ golf Southern Section scoring record in a 187-248 victory over Santa Barbara on Tuesday at Glen Annie Golf Club in Goleta.

The score bettered the 188 shot by Dos Pueblos last year.

Nicole Dishman and Sara Ovadia led the way with 36s, Amber Clifford shot 37, Victoria Alimonda shot 38 and Sarah Fox had a 40 on the par-35 course.

“I was kind of blown away that they did it,” Coach Doug Mitchell said. “We kind of set it as a season goal to break it, but we haven’t really talked about it at all since then.”

The Southern Section does not keep records for girls’ golf, but no other team has shot a better five-player score on a regulation nine-hole course since girls’ golf went to a five-player scoring format three years ago.

Long Beach Wilson shot three-over 193 last year at par-38 Recreation Park Golf Course and holds the record for score in relation to par. The 187 by Dos Pueblos is 12 over par.

The Anaheim Western boys’ water polo team appears out of place in the Southern Section Division VI coaches’ poll. Not because of the way the Pioneers have played this season, but because of where their school is located.

Western is ranked No. 8 in Division VI, sandwiched between teams from as far away as Palos Verdes and San Bernardino.

“It’s so spread out,” Western Coach Don Luethke said of Division VI. “Garden Grove and us [the Orange League] are the only Orange County leagues in this division.”

The inconsistency not only creates nearly 100-mile commutes during the playoffs, but makes the job of ranking the division’s top teams more difficult. Luethke said it sometimes takes Western a little while to get noticed.

The Pioneers are 9-5, 1-0 heading into today’s game against Santa Ana Century. Western started league play Tuesday, defeating Anaheim Savanna, 9-4, behind three goals by Nick Polichetti and two by Kevin Armijo.

“We lost to Savanna last year and it cost us a league title,” Luethke said.
