School Board Cuts Jobs, Hours to Combat Deficit
The San Diego Board of Education eliminated 616 non-teaching jobs and cut hours for more than 2,000 other employees in an effort to curb a deficit projected to be between $60 million and $84 million next year.
The cuts, approved Tuesday on a 3-2 vote, would save $22 million. Much of the remaining shortfall would be erased with additional state funding proposed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, reduced hours for principals and other employees, and cuts to special education.
The San Diego Unified School District, with a budget of $1.1 billion, attributes its looming deficit to low enrollment, which reduces state funding, and the increasing cost of employee benefits.
