From Times Staff Reports

Brittany Weil pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven, and second-ranked Garden Grove Pacifica defeated Newhall Hart, 3-1, on Friday to advance to today’s championship game of the Irvine Woodbridge tournament.

Pacifica (20-2) had three of its four hits against Robyn Kontra in the fourth inning. Crystal Vieyra singled and, after a fielder’s choice, Monica Harrison and Ashlyn Watson had run-scoring singles to center field. A double play on a botched squeeze play ended the inning.

Harrison also had a run-scoring grounder in the sixth that scored Noelle Micka, who had opened the inning with a single.

Consecutive two-out doubles in the seventh inning by Briana Bernardi and Karina Slauenwhite provided Hart (9-7-1) its only run. Despite its record, Hart had defeated three teams this season that were ranked in the top 10 in The Times’ Southland rankings.

“Their record didn’t indicate how they’ve been playing,” said Rob Weil, Pacifica’s coach. “They’ve lost a lot of close games.”

Pacifica will play the winner of today’s noon semifinal involving Woodbridge and No. 12 Thousand Oaks at 6 p.m. at Barber Park in Irvine.

The San Fernando Valley tournament, which continues today with semifinals and trophy games, held true to form with one major exception: Sun Valley Village Christian, the highest ranked team in the tournament at No. 12, was upset by West Hills Chaminade, 2-0, at Hjelte Sports Complex in Encino.

That sets up semifinals games today involving Chaminade and Newbury Park, and Westlake Village Westlake and Westlake Village Oaks Christian, which extended its winning streak to 46 games with a 3-2 victory over Simi Valley Royal. Both semifinals begin at 1:30 p.m. The championship is at 3:30 p.m.

Baseball

Mark Trumbo of Villa Park and Matt Bush of San Diego Mission Bay, two of the top high school baseball prospects in the country, are scheduled to pitch in the first game of an intersectional doubleheader at 4 p.m. today at Cal State Fullerton.

Trumbo (8-1), who has signed with USC, has not thrown since working the first four innings of a 2-1 victory on April 15 against Encino Crespi in the final of the El Dorado National Classic. He came into the week hitting .435 with a team-high six home runs for the Spartans, ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times.

Bush (4-0) is considered one of the nation’s most versatile players and is expected to play shortstop at the next level because of his defensive skills. Bush, who is hitting .407 with five home runs, has signed with San Diego State.

Villa Park (16-2, 8-1 in league play) was defeated by Tustin, 8-4, on Friday in a Century League game. Nik Tantardini went two for three with two RBIs and two runs scored and pinch-hitter Kevin Bostwich drove in two runs with a single for visiting Tustin (7-12, 4-5).

Track and Field

The Long Beach Poly girls’ team finished second to a team from Jamaica in the 400-meter relay at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia but the Jackrabbits still set a national high school record.

Running a team of Shana Solomon, Jasmine Lee, Chanda Picott and Sholanda Solomon, Poly clocked 44.50 behind Hayes Vere Technical’s 44.32, to break the old national high school mark of 44.63 set last year by Houston (Texas) Elsik.

The Jackrabbits came back to successfully defend their 1,600-meter relay title, winning easily in 3:36.85. The time is tied for sixth on the all-time list. Long Beach Poly, which earlier this year set the national high school record in the 800 relay and last year won the 1,600 relay at the Penn Relays with a national record, becomes the first school in history to hold the national records in all three relays.

Boys’ Golf

With Goleta Dos Pueblos’s top golfer and school record-holder Ryan Ritzau suffering from a recurring wrist injury, the rest of the Chargers rose to the occasion on an unfamiliar course to clinch the Channel League title with a 359-377 victory over Santa Barbara San Marcos.

Junior Sean Bowman and freshman Joaqin Mallmann each shot a one-under-par 71 Thursday at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course to earn medalist honors for No. 4 Dos Pueblos, which won its first outright Channel title in 10 years.

Junior Cameron DeVries led the way for the No. 10 Royals (15-7, 5-2) by shooting a 71. Ritzau and sophomore Jason Bullemer each finished with 74 for Dos Pueblos (13-2, 7-0).
