The family of a 43-year-old Oxnard man who was fatally hit by a municipal trash truck was awarded $519,000 in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the city, officials announced Friday.

Jayantilal Patel was killed Dec. 20, 2003, while walking in a crosswalk on 5th Street on his way to work.

In its lawsuit, the family contended that the truck driver, Andres Corona Jr., was looking in another direction and didn’t see Patel crossing the street.

Patel, who was married with two children, died at the scene from severe chest and abdominal injuries, authorities said.

“I am pleased with the jury’s verdict,” said attorney Ron Bamieh, who represented the family.

“They did an incredible job of listening to the evidence and realizing that the city’s denial was not based on the truth.”
