Wildfire Near Castaic Burns 1,000 Acres
Hundreds of firefighters battled Saturday evening to contain a wildfire that quickly burned about 1,000 acres in the Angeles National Forest near Castaic, authorities said.
The fire, reported about 2:40 p.m., began near Templin Highway and the Golden State Freeway. As daylight waned, it moved northwest near a power plant, but away from homes and into federal forest lands, said Kathy Peterson, a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman.
There were no evacuations. Air tankers, helicopters, bulldozers and more than 500 firefighters from the Forest Service and the Los Angeles County Fire Department tried to surround the fire. The fire was 10% contained by 8:30 p.m.
The fire closed two northbound lanes of the freeway shortly after 3 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
There were no reports of injuries or of damage to structures.
