UC Santa Barbara (6-4, 0-1) at UC Irvine (6-4, 1-0), 7, KUCI-FM (88.9), KTLK (1340) -- What appeared to be an easy victory at Long Beach on Saturday night turned into a shocking loss for the Gauchos, who committed an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers and failed to attack the 49ers’ 1-3-1 zone defense. “There’s something about the complacency of our basketball team,” Coach Bob Williams said. “Our team felt at the time that we were better than we really are.” Irvine, which played its first game in 13 days, got a balanced effort in its win over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Guard Jeff Gloger already has 99 career steals in only 39 games. Forward Greg Ethington is out indefinitely because of an “academic-related issue,” but the matter could be resolved before the winter quarter begins Friday, according to school officials.

Pacific (6-6, 1-0) at Cal State Fullerton (4-6, 0-1), 7, KWRM (1370) -- Fullerton was held to a season-low 55 points in failing to win its conference opener for the first time since the 1994-95 season. The Titans committed 24 turnovers, and it doesn’t figure to get any easier with the defensive-minded Tigers. Surprising freshman Bobby Brown struggled through an eight-turnover, three-for-11 shooting performance. Pacific outscored UC Riverside, 42-28, in the second half to pull away for a victory Saturday night.

Cal State Northridge (5-4, 1-0) at UC Riverside (3-6, 0-1), 7, KPRO (1570) -- Sloppy as its play may have been, Northridge got its first road win of the season with a victory over Fullerton. Point guard Davin White, a transfer from Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Arizona, is averaging 13.8 points and 4.1 assists. Point guard Brett Ost and reserve forward Jeff Mailhot may not be available for Riverside because of concussions they suffered earlier in the week against Sacramento State. Leading scorer Nate Carter did not start Saturday but played 26 minutes and scored seven points.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (5-4, 0-1) at Long Beach State (3-7, 1-0), 7:30 -- Long Beach’s 21-point second-half comeback against Santa Barbara is the largest in the nine-year history of the Pyramid. Louis Darby not only had a buzzer-beating three-pointer but also had a career-high 17 points and may have a permanent spot in the 49er starting lineup.

Pepperdine (5-9) at Utah (10-3), 9, ESPN -- The Waves culminate their difficult nonconference schedule with an opponent that is among the nation’s toughest to beat at home. Utah is 7-0 at the Huntsman Center this season and has won 92% of its home games in 15 seasons under Coach Rick Majerus. With its 91-65 loss to Colorado State on Saturday, Pepperdine has dropped three in a row for the second time this season. Utah has won four in a row and seven of its last eight.
