Palomino Enters Boxing Hall
Carlos Palomino, who won the World Boxing Council welterweight title in 1976 and successfully defended it seven times before losing it in 1979 to Wilfred Benitez, joined 14 other former champions and boxing officials Thursday in being named to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Palomino, who retired at 30 after losing to Roberto Duran, had a record of 31-4-3 with 19 knockouts. He coaches young fighters in the Los Angeles area.
He will be inducted in the modern-era category, along with light-heavyweight Dwight Muhammad Qawi, featherweight Azumah Nelson of Ghana and bantamweight Daniel Zaragoza of Mexico. Inductees are selected by the Boxing Writers Assn. and a panel of boxing historians.
Referee Stanley Christodoulou led the list of officials who will be inducted with the boxers on June 13 in Canastota, N.Y.
