Rancho Cucamonga regains the top spot in the rankings after posting two 1-0 victories during a week in which Santa Ana Mater Dei and Anaheim Esperanza each suffered its second defeat of the season. Fountain Valley, which beat Esperanza, 2-0, in a Sunset League opener Wednesday, moves into the No. 2 spot. La Verne Damien moves to fifth after defeating Anaheim Servite, 4-0, in the championship game of the Anaheim Canyon tournament on Jan. 5 and beating Diamond Bar by an identical score in a Sierra League opener Friday.

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel took third at the Irvine Northwood tournament Saturday, but traveled with only half of its starters, so the “Church Boyz” remain at No. 1. Temecula Valley beat Temescal Canyon, 59-6, in a dual meet Thursday. Covina Northview has not lost a tournament or a dual meet this season and finished first at the Nogales tournament Saturday. Ayala, which beat Chino Hills, 69-6, in a dual Thursday, is a better team than it is given credit for on the California Wrestler website. Orange El Modena took sixth at the Peoria (Ariz.) tournament Saturday.

Westlake Village Westlake went undefeated (14-0) in Marmonte League play last season, but the Warriors slipped two spots after losing, 3-2, to Thousand Oaks in league play Saturday. Los Alamitos lost to Huntington Beach Edison, 1-0, in Sunset League play. Walnut fell, 1-0, to Irvine Northwood in the Claremont tournament finals. Santa Margarita split its four games in Dallas at the Adidas showcase against some of the top teams in the country. San Clemente, which tied Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills, 2-2, in the South Coast League.

Santa Ana Foothill and Santa Barbara retain their season-long holds on the top spots in the rankings. Long Beach Wilson lost to Montebello in a nonleague game and is replaced at No. 3 by Newport Harbor, which defeated Santa Margarita and La Jolla The Bishop’s. Corona del Mar topped Santa Margarita, 8-7, in overtime Saturday, but remains at No. 6 because of an earlier loss to Wilson. Despite two losses, Santa Margarita stays at No. 8, ahead of Los Alamitos, which defeated No. 10 Pico Rivera El Rancho, based on strength of schedule.
