Wiley-Gatewood, who is averaging 23 points and 9.5 assists, sat out for the first time this season Jan. 14 because of a knee injury.

She is expected to be sidelined this week, when the Knights play at Cerritos Gahr tonight and play host to Downey on Friday in San Gabriel Valley League games, and play host to Perris in a nonleague game Saturday.

Natasha Thomas of Inglewood Morningside had 10 blocked shots in the Monarchs’ 70-57 victory Friday over Redondo. Though the 6-foot-3 senior has scored only 13 points the last two games, she has 15 blocks.

Fullerton Sunny Hills (19-2, 3-0 in league) is one of the hottest teams in the Southland, largely because of forward Tanya Taylor, who Thursday set a school freshman season record with 20 goals.

Taylor scored five goals this week in two Freeway League games. She had three goals in Sunny Hills’ 11-0 victory over Buena Park on Jan. 13 and two in the team’s 4-0 victory over La Habra on Thursday.

Taylor, who has 13 assists, scored the game-winning goal in the Lancers’ 1-0 victory over Aliso Niguel on Dec. 10. She has two more goals than sophomore forward Jessica Sharpe, who has been the other major threat on offense.

“We put a lot of pressure on teams,” said Coach Jeff Gordon, whose squad has 15 shutouts. “We believe the best goalies are the ones who make zero saves.”

The Lancers have won their league championship nine of the last 13 seasons, but Fullerton Troy won last season with a 10-0 record.

The teams meet for the first time this season at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Sunny Hills.

Mike Goar, coach of Mira Loma Jurupa Valley, has been put on paid administrative leave by the Jurupa Unified School District pending an investigation into an unspecified personnel matter.

“I’m not answering any questions at this time,” Goar said.

Citing personnel issues, Jurupa Valley school officials also would not comment on the matter, and district officials did not return phones messages.

“I’m just on the outside looking in. I don’t know all the details,” said Ben Bunz, Jurupa Valley’s assistant principal in charge of operations, athletics and activities. “There’s just things that have to be investigated and that I’m just not at liberty to say.”

In the absence of Goar, who also coaches the school’s swimming teams, assistant Cami Wilson has been coaching the water polo team on an interim basis. Jurupa Valley was the Southern Section Division VI runner-up to Rowland last season.

Irvine Woodbridge Coach Dion Gray, the starting goalie for the U.S. national women’s water polo team from 1976 to 1986, attended a ceremony at St. Louis on Saturday honoring her and five others who will be part of the first class of women to be inducted into the U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame at Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Gray, 47, was a member of three U.S. teams that finished third in World Championships in Germany in 1978, in Ecuador in 1982 and in Spain in 1986.

“I’m definitely honored and proud to be in the first group. We blazed a lot of trails,” Gray said beforehand.
