La Puente Bishop Amat (18-2), ranked No. 6 in the Southland by The Times, plays host to No. 23 Torrance Bishop Montgomery (12-6) tonight at 7 at Edgewood Middle School. It will be the Lancers’ 11th opponent that has been ranked by The Times.

“If you’re going to be a good team, you have to play a good schedule.” Coach Richard Wiard said. “We did, and we are.”

Led by two-time Times’ player of the year Noelle Quinn, now at UCLA, Bishop Montgomery won the last nine meetings with Bishop Amat, including last year’s Division III-A title game. With Quinn, Bishop Montgomery won the last four Del Rey League titles. Before that, Bishop Amat won four consecutive league championships.

Wiard said it’s unclear if forward Chasmine Jones, who has averaged 13.3 points and 8.7 rebounds, will play against Bishop Montgomery. Jones has sat out four of the last five games because of tendinitis in her Achilles’ tendon.

Palmdale Highland hopes its depth will carry it to a fifth consecutive victory over Lancaster when the teams meet tonight in a key Golden League game at Lancaster High.

The Bulldogs (18-2, 4-0), ranked fourth in Southern Section Division I-AA, have only one returning starter from last season’s team that finished 29-4, but Coach Jeff Smith has benefited from a rotation that usually goes 10 deep.

Highland’s returning starter, 6-4 senior forward Curtis McHenry, is averaging a team-high 18 points and 9.5 rebounds. He has been complemented by Dante Green (11 points) and Vincent Alexander (10.5), also 6-4 seniors.

Lancaster (12-7, 4-0) has won six of its last seven games, including an 82-51 victory over Palmdale on Tuesday. Highland defeated Palmdale, 61-54, four days earlier.
