Late Goal Ties It for Mater Dei

Matt Murphy scored on a free kick with three minutes left to give visiting Santa Ana Mater Dei a 3-3 tie with Anaheim Servite in a Serra League boys’ soccer game on Wednesday.

Mater Dei (11-2-4, 1-1-3 in league), ranked No. 10 in the Southland by The Times, led, 2-1, at halftime. But No. 9 Servite (16-7-2, 3-1-1) tied the score at 2-2 on a goal by Curtis Cummins at the 51-minute mark.

The Friars took a 3-2 lead when Martin Quiroz scored nine minutes later.

On Monday, Servite had to forfeit a tie with Torrance Bishop Montgomery on Jan. 22 because a Friar player who had been issued a red card in the team’s previous game against Bellflower St. John Bosco had been in the stands during the first half, a violation of Southern Section rules.

However, the Friars picked up a forfeit victory over Santa Margarita on Wednesday because a Santa Margarita player who had been issued a red card in a game against Irvine on Jan. 7 attended the team’s next game against Servite, which ended in a scoreless tie.
