Pedestrian Deaths Stir Complaints on Drivers

Share

For health reasons I recently started walking about 3 1/4 miles per day. My route takes me through the neighborhood and is usually without incident. Yet I could not help notice how many people fail to stop at the eight-sided sign with the red background and four white letters. The most distressing thing observed was the number of folks taking children to school and blatantly showing no regard for the California Vehicle Code. What are they teaching their children?

My challenge to all of you: Pick a day of the week and on that day stop at every stop sign you encounter, and when safe proceed. For those of you who make the extra effort and come to a full and complete stop, and when safe proceed, I thank you very much.

Your Oct. 28 report on the two tragic crosswalk fatalities gave the impression that the “heavy downpour” and the one victim’s gray clothing were valid excuses for the drivers not seeing them in the street. I believe California law holds the driver responsible for maintaining a safe speed under the prevailing conditions. Were those sport utility vehicles traveling slowly enough for the driver to see a pedestrian step into the crosswalk, considering those conditions? Somehow I doubt it. This is a sin of which many of us are guilty.
