As the Chino Don Lugo boys and Ventura girls attempt to defend state championships today in the highly competitive Division I races at Woodward Park in Fresno, Southland schools will also be challenging for Division V team and individual titles.

The Flintridge Prep, Pasadena Maranatha and Riverside Woodcrest Christian boys and girls, the Oxnard Santa Clara boys and North Coast Section champion University of San Francisco girls will wage a close battle for team honors.

Rachel Gill and Rebecca Cassou led Maranatha to the girls’ Division V title at the Southern Section championships last week by finishing second and third to defending state champion Tani Brown of Brentwood. Led by Tom McLean, Flintridge Prep is a slight favorite in the boys’ race over Tim Burdett and Woodcrest Christian and Miguel Cisneros and Santa Clara. Maranatha, with section runner-up Tony Hilling and fourth-place finisher J.J. Timphony, is also a factor. Claremont Webb’s Greg Burris, the section champion, is the individual favorite with Maranatha’s duo and section third-placer Ryan Gordon of Brentwood.
