City Denies Claim to Lower Water Rates
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The city has denied a claim seeking to have the Department of Water and Power roll back water rates and refund $800 million, a spokesman for state Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-Sun Valley) said Friday.
Alarcon had assisted some L.A. residents in challenging an 11% increase in water rates as an illegal tax. The group can still press its demands in court.
DWP General Manager Henry Martinez denied the rate hike was illegal. “We believe we have been doing the right thing under the City Charter,” he said.
