Permit System Imposed on Venice Beach Sellers

Defying warnings that the action would crush the spirit of Venice Beach, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to impose a lottery and permit system for those who peddle their wares and talents on the famous boardwalk.
The ordinance will require painters, musicians and others who set up shop on the west side of Ocean Front Walk to buy a $25 lifetime permit and participate in a lottery each month for one of 106 spaces.
