Port Official Sits Out Decision on His Firm
Los Angeles port commission President Nick Tonsich recused himself Wednesday from the decision to hire a company represented by his law firm for a $300,000 hazardous waste project.
Commissioners voted 3 to 1 to hire Advanced Cleanup Technologies Inc. and three other firms for port projects totaling $2 million.

Harbor Commission vote -- A news brief in the Oct. 28 California section about Los Angeles Harbor Commission President Nicholas Tonsich’s recusal from a vote failed to note that he had requested an opinion on the issue from City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo before a port critic wrote to Delgadillo about Tonsich’s ties to a potential port contractor.
Following instructions from the city attorney’s office, Tonsich was not present at the discussion.
His ties to Advanced Cleanup became an issue when port critic Janet Gunter wrote to City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo, questioning the firm’s bid on a different port project.
