City Section’s Kamiyama Dies

Sue Kamiyama, who spent 32 years as a teacher, coach and athletic director at Bell and was one of the most influential athletic administrators in the state, died Tuesday after a long bout with cancer. She was 54.

Kamiyama served as chairwoman of the City Section rules committee for more than 15 years.

She also served on various committees for the California Interscholastic Federation.

A funeral service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Orange County Buddhist Church in Anaheim.

Cross-Country

Simi Valley Royal, the No. 1-ranked boys’ team in the Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, easily won the Ventura County Championships held over a three-mile course at Lake Casitas.

Junior Ted Price of Camarillo was the individual winner in 15 minutes 16 seconds.

Royal’s Dylan Jaedtke, Mike Cybulski and Jason Pedersen placed 2-3-4 to pace the Highlanders, who scored 34 points. Westlake Village Westlake was second with 109 and Oak Park, the No. 3-ranked team in Division III, was third with 112 points.

In the girls’ race, Ventura, the No. 1-ranked team in Division I and the defending state champion, placed four runners in the top six and scored 26 points to easily outdistance runner-up Royal, the No. 5 ranked team in Division I, with 78 points. Westlake was third at 147.

Sophomore Anna Sperry of Simi Valley was the girls’ individual winner in 17:54. Ventura’s Emily Spiker was second at 18:11 and teammate Jessica Bryant was third at 18:23.

Basketball

The City Section boys’ coaches at Westchester, King-Drew and Locke, along with the girls’ coach at Westchester, have been suspended from coaching in their first practice games of the season for missing a mandatory coaches’ meeting last week.

Artesia’s boys’ team could receive a boost by the addition of 6-foot-10 Shawntelle Norman, a junior transfer from Tulsa, Okla.

Field Hockey

The Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions, the postseason championship for Southern Section teams, begins today with quarterfinal games.

Defending champion Newport Harbor (12-1-5), which has lost only two games the last two seasons, won the Sunset League with a 4-0-4 record and will play host to West Hills Chaminade (6-8).

Huntington Beach Marina travels to Glendora in the other upper-bracket game. Golden West League champion La Verne Bonita (14-4-2) plays host to Huntington Beach Edison (11-3-5), and North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake (9-2-4) plays at Huntington Beach in the other bracket.

Semifinal games will be played Tuesday. The finals will be played at Fountain Valley High, with the third-place game Wednesday and the championship Thursday, both at 3:15 p.m.

Amanda Klimczak, a Times’ All-San Gabriel Valley pitcher from Pomona Diamond Ranch, has committed to Boston College.
