Eugene Erickson, 86; Was Rancho Los Amigos Hospital Administrator

Eugene Erickson, 86, who for 23 years was the administrator of Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Downey, died of congestive heart failure Feb. 26 at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.

During Erickson’s tenure from 1953 through 1976, the Downey hospital developed and pioneered special programs to serve and rehabilitate patients with severe physical problems, notably spinal cord injuries and birth defects.

A native of Minneapolis, Erickson grew up in Southern California. His father served for a time as city manager of Long Beach.

Erickson, who served in the Navy during World War II, graduated from UCLA with a degree in business administration and earned a master’s degree in public administration from USC.
