From Times Staff Reports

Key matchups involving rivals Long Beach Poly and Long Beach Wilson, particularly in the girls’ hurdles and short relays, highlight the high school portion of the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on Saturday in Walnut.

Competition begins at 8:30 a.m. with open relays and field events and a few invitational relays. The major invitational portion of the meet begins at 4 p.m.

An expected highlight of the boys’ competition will be a rematch involving Long Beach Poly and Woodland Hills Taft in the 400-meter relay. At the Arcadia Invitational last Saturday, Poly won in 41.03 seconds. Taft, which had finished second, was later disqualified for passing the baton out of the zone. Poly is expected to be at full strength for the 1,600 relay, where it will challenge Los Angeles Dorsey, the national leader at 3:11.49.

Baseball

Pitcher Matt Hiserman, who was struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of a Riverside Poly player on Wednesday during Mission Viejo Capistrano’s 9-4 victory in the title game of the Irvine/Big West tournament, suffered two fractures of the maxilla, or upper jaw bone, on the right side of his face. Hiserman, a junior, received medical clearance Thursday to resume practice but is not expected to play in a game for at least another week.

Colton High will retire the jersey of former National League rookie of the year Ken Hubbs before its alumni game Saturday at the school.

Hubbs won the award as a second baseman for the Chicago Cubs in 1962, when he set a major-league record with 78 consecutive errorless games. Two years later, at the age of 22, he was killed in a private plane crash near Provo, Utah.
