Red Sox Put Wells on DL

Boston pitcher David Wells went on the disabled list Tuesday and could be sidelined for more than a month after spraining his right foot.

Red Sox Manager Terry Francona said the 41-year-old left-hander won’t need surgery for the injury, sustained in the fourth inning of Monday night’s 8-4 loss to Baltimore. Instead, Wells will rest and then rehabilitate the foot.

Boston recalled left-hander Lenny DiNardo from triple-A Pawtucket to take Wells’ roster spot.

Francona said Wells would be sidelined for up to six weeks, but team physician Thomas Gill said in a statement, “There is no exact time frame for his return.”

Left-hander John Halama will take Wells’ spot in the rotation.

Detroit Tiger outfielder Magglio Ordonez will be sidelined for at least two months after hernia surgery.

Ordonez, who signed a $75-million, five-year contract with Detroit during the off-season, will be operated on by Dr. Bill Meyers today in Philadelphia.

Ordonez was sent back to Detroit from Minnesota last Wednesday because of what the team described as a viral infection.

Seattle Mariner minor league outfielder Jamal Strong was suspended for 10 days, making him the fourth player to test positive under Major League Baseball’s new policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Strong, who graduated from Pasadena High, was with triple-A Tacoma this season.

Right-hander Chad Fox was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Chicago Cubs because of an injured right elbow. The Cubs recalled left-hander Will Ohman from triple-A Iowa.... Colorado activated third baseman Garrett Atkins from the disabled list and optioned Jeff Baker to triple-A Colorado Springs.... Toronto catcher Greg Myers chose to become a free agent instead of accepting an assignment to triple-A Syracuse.
