Boy Grabbed From Mother in Venice
A 2-year-old boy was snatched from his mother’s arms on a Venice street by a woman and two men Friday, and police later were questioning a man as a possible suspect.
One of the kidnappers handed the stunned mother a piece of paper that read “You are served” before ducking into a car with Jason Steel Murdock, authorities said.
“He was screaming ‘Mommy! Mommy!’ ” his mother, Dorothy Murdock, said at a news conference.
Murdock said she is in a custody dispute with the child’s father, and police called him a “person of interest.”
Jason was taken about 1:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of Penmar Avenue, Los Angeles Police Officer Sandra Escalante said. The woman who tore him from his mother fled with a man in a white four-door station wagon, believed to be a 2002 model.
The second man fled in a black 2002 Ford pickup truck, California license plate 6W95060.
Murdock said she ripped a windshield wiper from one of the vehicles.
Authorities issued a “child abduction regional emergency media alert.”
The man believed to have been driving the black pickup was being questioned late Friday night, but police did not identify him.
The 28-pound youngster, who will turn 3 next month, is just over 3 feet tall and has blond hair and blue eyes, police said. He was wearing a blue sweatshirt, bluejeans, blue shoes and a green coat.
The woman was described as white, in her early 30s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and 130 pounds.
She wore a long blue coat with a hood.
