Harvard-Westlake Wins Again

The North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake boys’ tennis team proved even tougher the second time around, routing Santa Barbara, 15-3, in the Southern Section Division I championship match Wednesday at the Claremont Club.
The Wolverines beat the Dons, 13-5, in a nonleague match during the regular season. The latest victory, its 45th in a row, gave top-seeded Harvard-Westlake (23-0) its second consecutive Division I title and its third championship in four years.
Second-seeded Santa Barbara (20-2), which lost only to the Wolverines this season and posted its second runner-up finish in the division in three years, picked up three sets from its top player, Stanford-bound Blake Muller, but nothing else.
Harvard-Westlake won all nine doubles sets and six of nine singles sets.
The Wolverines’ top doubles team of senior Josh Lederman and sophomore Michael Vann started the doubles sweep with a 7-5 victory over Santa Barbara’s No. 1 team of seniors Grant Robertson and Greg Soulages.
Sam Wagner, who will attend Boston College in the fall, had a 3-2 lead on Muller, the Southern Section singles semifinalist, before losing, 6-3. Wagner came from behind to defeat Santa Barbara’s No. 2 player, A.J. Stein, 6-4.
Palos Verdes Chadwick 10, Pasadena Poly 8 -- Freshman left-hander Austin Chafetz won two singles matches to lift the top-seeded Dolphins to the Division III title.
Chafetz trailed, 5-4, against Pasadena Poly freshman Derek Hsu in the last set to be completed. Chafetz held serve to make it 5-5, then broke Hsu for a 6-5 edge and won the last game at love to seal a 7-5 victory and the match.
Chadwick (14-3) took eight of nine doubles sets, including three each by the No. 1 team of Aaron Webman and Winston Taira and the No. 3 team of Kevin Bennett and Jasper Jin. Second-seeded Pasadena Poly finished 17-6-2.

Brentwood 10, Beverly Hills 8 -- Daniel Freeman swept, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Steve Elson and Evan Paley also swept as top-seeded Brentwood won its second Division IV title in three years.
Willie Brien and Ethan Bond won two of three sets at No. 2 doubles for the second-seeded Normans (15-7), who won the final two sets to make the final score closer.
Michael Riordan and Max Elins won two sets at No. 1 doubles for Brentwood (17-3).
Calabasas Viewpoint 13, Cerritos Whitney 5 -- Troy List swept, 6-0, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 3 singles to lead Viewpoint to its second consecutive Division V title.
Nigel Beckmeier and Brandon Mischel swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles for the fourth-seeded Patriots (18-6), who had upset No. 1-seeded Carpinteria Cate in the semifinals.
Andy Shin won two of three sets at No. 2 singles and Robert Lee and William Cho won two sets at No. 1 doubles for third-seeded Whitney (19-7).
