“Of course you get worried, but then the defense steps up,” said Fullen, a senior who was the Division II player of the year in 2004.

Cari Levine’s second goal gave the Sea Kings a 9-4 advantage. Jordan Anae and Katlin Kubas, who was charged with guarding Doud, also had fourth-quarter goals.

Doud and Gordon finished with two goals each for Laguna Beach.

Whittier 12, Chino Hills Ayala 11 -- MaryAnn Campos had a team-high four goals and Amanda Manning scored two critical fourth-quarter goals to help the top-seeded Cardinals win the Division III championship in overtime, their first section title.

It was Whittier’s second victory over Ayala in three meetings this season. The Cardinals defeated Ayala, 11-8, for the Ayala tournament title, then lost to the Bulldogs, 15-14, in a Whittier/Bonita tournament game.

This time, Campos rallied Whittier (28-3) from a 2-0 first-quarter deficit with three goals later in the period. Manning scored her first fourth-quarter goal immediately after Ayala (24-4) pulled to within one, at 7-6, with 6:40 to go in regulation on a goal by junior Chelsea Curran. Manning scored again to give the Cardinals a two-goal cushion with 5:40 to play after Curran’s younger sister, Dani, pulled Ayala to within one, at 8-7, with a goal.

Chelsea Curran, a junior center who finished with six goals, scored with 2:34 to play in regulation to tie the score, 9-9.
