Jamal Boykin of Los Angeles Fairfax has been named the Gatorade state player of the year in boys’ basketball.

Boykin, a 6-foot-7 forward who will attend Duke in the fall, led the Lions (26-6) to the Southern California Regional Division I final, where they lost to eventual state champion Westchester, 54-53. He also led the Lions to their fourth consecutive appearance in the City Section title game.

A Times’ All-Star last season, Boykin was named the state’s best junior by Cal-Hi Sports after he led Fairfax to the Division I state championship.

Whether running, fielding or hitting, center fielder Joe Dickerson of Anaheim Esperanza puts on a show.

“He’s been something special,” Coach Mike Curran said.

On Tuesday in a Sunset League game, Dickerson had a triple and made a running catch as the Aztecs (7-2 overall, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in the Southland by The Times, scored a 7-1 victory over host Huntington Beach Edison (6-3, 1-1), ranked No. 10.

Matt Daly threw a four-hitter and struck out eight, and P.J. Spinazze hit a two-run homer.

Dickerson, who has signed with Texas, has five home runs and two triples in nine games.

Long Beach Millikan, ranked No. 23 in the Southland by The Times, is scheduled to play its first game today, a home doubleheader against Paramount.

Rained out on Friday, today’s makeup doubleheader comes 20 days after the official start of the Southern Section season.

“Once we get started, we don’t stop,” said Coach Lynn Curylo, whose team features pitcher Kara Harper and hard-hitting sophomore Jackie Tema.

Because Millikan plays a 12-game Moore League schedule, the Rams can only schedule two nonleague dates in addition to tournament games. They play a league game Thursday at Long Beach Jordan and begin the Anaheim Loara tournament on Friday against Lakewood St. Joseph.
